Tap Water Safety?

Is tap water truly safe to Drink?

Do you know that approximately 2 billion people worldwide use drinking water sources contaminated with faces, pollutants, and other chemicals? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States has one of the safest public drinking water supplies. However, more than 15 million U.S. households still rely on private wells for drinking water. These numbers of people could be exposing themselves to contaminated home drinking water. Now that you know this, how safe is your home drinking or tap water?

Drinking-Water Problem: Overview

Today, I will like to talk to you about how the water you and your family, including your dogs or cats, friends are drinking, could be putting you and your loved one’s health in danger.

Over 286 million people (15-20%) get their tap water from a community (public) water system, which is considered the safest. What about the remaining 80-85% of people living in the U.S.? What about the other folks living outside the U.S.? Where are they getting their drinking water source?

I will like to thank you for doing your research because there is much confusing information, and countless people claiming to be experts in the health and fitness industries out there on the internet.

According to the CDC reports, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates only drinking water from the public water systems. The majority of the drinking water that has their sources from PRIVATE, HOUSEHOLD WELLS not controlled.

How does the water get to our house?

The water that you and I drink every day at home comes from a water treatment facility after going through specific processes. Ideally, the water is supposed to go through a series of methods such as filtration, distillation, and

But unfortunately, this water treatment still doesn’t give you a 100% guarantee that your water is free of all contaminants. What it shows is that the contaminants’ levels shouldn’t pose any serious health risk.

In the event of a water contamination incident, your water suppliers are supposed to inform and find you alternative safe drinking water. Also, they have 24 hours to notify customers of any violation of standards that could have a significant impact on health following short-term exposure. But that doesn’t happen 100% of the time.

What are the causes of water contamination?

Water contamination is due to many causes, and it involved the combined action of major societal forces and individuals. For example, companies and individuals like you, and I continue to use and dump non-biodegradable wastes, chemical, and radiological compounds in water bodies.

Water pollution is one of the public concerns that gave birth to the “Going Green Revolution.”

Contamination of drinking water supplies varies depending on the type of sources, and do occur from either the water source, the distribution system after water treatment has already happened, and your home piping system.

Drinking water sources can easily be contaminated and require proper treatment to remove disease-causing contaminants.

There are many causes of water contamination. They comprise:

– Biological (microbes-germs) such as Cryptosporidium parasites, bacteria, and viruses (cholera)

-Chemical: naturally occurring chemicals and minerals (lead, mercury, arsenic, radon, uranium).

-local land-use practices (fertilizers, pesticides, concentrated feeding operations)

– manufacturing processes, and

-sewer overflows or wastewater releases (most common in the underdeveloped countries).

Farm pollution is one of the significant reasons water is no longer clean or safe throughout the nation. Agriculture is the leading source of contamination of rivers and streams surveyed by U.S. government experts, according to the EPA.

Adverse effects of home water contamination

Water contaminants can produce significant health problems, including brain disorders, reproductive issues, and gastrointestinal illness.

Some harmful chemicals (VOCs) contaminate private wells occasionally.  Some of these chemicals have drawn the public and media attention as cancer-causing compounds.  Other health impacts include brain damages (nervous system pathology), kidneys problem, skin irritation, liver, and others.

Tips. The CDC recommended the following for their provision of safe water for bathing and cleaning, as well as for cooking and drinking:

  • Do specialized testing.
  • Then choose a filter system with a point-of-entry (where your water pipe enters your house),
  • Or a whole-house filter system for VOCs

Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and immunocompromised people due to cancer drugs (chemotherapy) or transplant medications, autoimmune diseases, AIDS, may be especially vulnerable to sickness from some contaminants.

As scary as it is, water-related sicknesses are preventable if you and I do our part by taking the right action or making those small necessary changes. Thankfully, if we make simple changes like using cost-efficient systems and recycling products,  we can take a big step toward clean water (going green).

Other small changes one can individually make can be purchasing an affordable home water filter system. Please click here for my best water filter system reviews.

What ways do people combat this problem?

There are various ways people try to solve this problem. Although some of the methods prevent your exposure to a certain degree, they are costly long-term and evil for the planet. For example, some people use Bottled water, some use diet drinks, and others consumed soda drinks.

But there are other better, healthier, long-lasting, and cost-effective solutions, in the long run, that majority of people are unaware of or seems to ignore because of inaccurate information.

Commercially Bottled Water

People choose bottled water for various reasons, including health concerns, taste, convenience, or as a substitute for other beverages. According to statistics, billions of dollars are being spent on bottled water every year in the U.S. In 2012, 9.7 billion gallons of bottled water consumed, 6.2% more than the previous year.

Just like food, the FDA also regulates bottled water. They can order a bottled water recall once there is a problem, but you cannot be confident if the bottle of water you bought is safe.

Tip. If you have to use bottled water, I strongly suggest looking for bottled water companies that treat their water with these methods to protect against Cryptosporidium.

The treatments are:

  • Reverse osmosis  system
  • Distillation, and
  • Filtration with an absolute 1-micron filter.

Common reasons to have a filter

Water has the characteristics of colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Occasionally, the tap water you and I drink at home has some unpleasant taste due to the chemicals (chlorine) used in the purification process to keep the water safe from pathogenic disease-causing organisms.

Other chemicals like sulfur can also contribute to this taste. It is imperative that you know that water that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless can still be contaminated.

Therefore, to ensure that your home drinking water is safe, it is advised that you supplement whatever supply source you have with the drinking water filter system.

Not protecting your health but also save yourself some money on bottled water, and most importantly, preserve the planet.

One of the reasons people also purchase a home water filter is to enhance the water taste. For instance, most of our latest advance refrigerators and pitcher come with filters (mostly activated carbon filters) mainly to improve the taste of drinking water (CDC).

Caution: The majority of the home filters in the market don’t completely protect against contaminants such as microorganisms (germs), medications, and radioactive cancer-causing chemicals.

Also, using certain water filters can remove the chlorine, which might elevate the pathogenic organisms to a toxic level.

Additionally, using filters with reverse osmosis process can not only enhance your water taste and odor but also decrease “the levels of common chemicals such as a lead” (CDC, 2014).

An activated carbon filter system can also eliminate some Volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

If having products that only created with biodegradable material is very important to you, there are some “Go Green” products such as the EcoPure water filter system.

What are the benefits of a water filter?

  • REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMImprove the odor and taste (filter label must have NSF 42).
  • Decrease the levels of some common chemical, including lead.
  • Protect against germs if it doesn’t remove chlorine.

 Drinking water Filters system

1. Activated carbon filters: remove specific organic contaminants that affect taste and odor. Some can also remove pesticides, byproducts of chlorine, and some metals such as lead, mercury, and copper. Activated carbon filters commonly used with another filtration method, such as carbon absorption or reverse osmosis.

2.  Ion exchange with activated alumina filters can remove inorganic minerals such as calcium and magnesium (water hardeners).

3. The distillation type uses evaporation (heating) and condenses the water steam to produce distilled water.

4. Reverse osmosis system combined with activated carbon can remove sodium and nitrates, including pesticides and petrochemicals.

Note: For 100% elimination of all contaminants, a combination of 2 or more filter system is recommended.   If you do choose to install a filter system, it is recommended you have a certified laboratory technician first test your water.

Buying a filter is only one part of it. Maintenance is vital because failure to maintain your filter properly will cause contaminants to clog up your screen and make the water quality worse than without the filter.

It’s vital to know that a home water filter won’t protect you from water that has been declared unsafe. If that happens in your area, follow your local water authorities’ advice until the water is declared safe to drink once more.

Why you should be worried

According to the Environmental Water Group (EWG), Obtaining a passing grade from the government doesn’t mean water is safe.” Unfortunately, the Federal government standard for drinking water is often inadequate to protect public health.

Also, there are no enforceable federal health standards for many chemicals known to pose risks to human and animal lives.

Drinking water standards and other environmental regulations frequently established and approved based on political and economic compromises aimed at keeping treatment costs down.

As you can see, these are serious allegations. Like I always told my wife, that allegation like these could have some hidden motive, there are still some truth elements.

I always recommend that people take caution before drawing to the conclusion that there are still two sides of a coin. Each of them is not 100% honest. Evidence can taint through the companies giving bribe just like your drinking water.

But if what the EWG is telling the truth? It is better to be on the safe side by providing extra protection through the purchase of a commercial trusted filtration device in your home that you did and maintain yourself.
